University of Rawalpindi Engages Faculty on Integrating Sustainability into Teaching and Learning

University of Rawalpindi, through its Office of Sustainability, conducted a Faculty Sensitization Session on “Integrating Sustainability into Teaching & Learning at UOR” on 28 October 2026. Facilitated by Ms. Zoya Baig, Sustainability & Impact Officer, the session focused on practical approaches for incorporating sustainability into existing teaching practices, research, student projects, and departmental activities.

The session introduced faculty members to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlighted opportunities for strengthening sustainability-related research, publications, student engagement, and community-based initiatives at the University of Rawalpindi. Faculty were also briefed on UOR’s progress in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, reinforcing the University’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible campus development.

International practices from leading institutions, including University College London (UCL) and the University of British Columbia (UBC), were shared to demonstrate how sustainability can be incorporated into existing academic structures without creating unnecessary academic burden. Approaches discussed included embedding sustainability themes into course content, adapting existing assignments, using real-world sustainability case studies, and using the university campus as a living laboratory for learning and research.

The session further introduced a proposed focused UN/UNITAR online certificate learning pilot for selected academically relevant courses. Faculty also discussed potential opportunities for departmental sustainability initiatives, research projects, and an interdepartmental Sustainability Week to further strengthen sustainability engagement across the University.

Through initiatives such as this, the University of Rawalpindi continues to strengthen sustainability within academic learning and institutional practices. By equipping faculty with practical approaches and international examples, UOR aims to encourage students and academic departments to move beyond sustainability awareness towards meaningful sustainability practice, research, and community engagement.
